Installation Issues

1. CascadePoint will not register.

  • Check to see if you have the latest version of CascadePoint -- click on the icon in the upper left corner of the CascadePoint window, and select "Check for Updates".
  • Because CascadePoint needs to install a file system driver, it is necessary to run the installer from an administrator account. (The CascadePoint installer will attempt to elevate the account to administrator if possible.)
  • Click on the "Register" section to get to the registration tab. We recommend cutting & pasting the name & key from the email; as soon as you enter anything into the "User Name" or "Key:" fields, the "Apply" button will be enabled. When you click "Apply" or "OK" you should see a popup message box that says "Registration was successful".
  • Make certain when you cut and paste the name that you cut the entire name including "system license"
Operations Questions

1. Can CascadePoint backup my whole computer?

  • No -- CascadePoint is a "document" backup and archiving (versioning) system, not a "system" backup.

2. What types of files can CascadePoint archive?

  • CascadePoint works with most common document types, such as Microsoft Office files, photos, text files, etc.
  • Very large files (>500MB), such as video files or large mail archives will defintely slow down CascadePoint!
  • Files that change very rapidly (such as database files) will slow your system and rapidly consume your disk space while CascadePoint constantly archives new versions.

3. CascadePoint isn't archiving anything!

  • Check the "Include / Exclude" page -- if you haven't specified any directories in the "Include Directories" list, CascadePoint will only archive files in your documents folder ("My Documents" in XP, "Documents" in Vista).

4. CascadePoint does not seem to archive some extension types

  • CascadePoint will archive the vast majority of extensions correctly...but...
  • There are some applications that have very strange ways of opening and saving files!
  • When we find these, we have been successful in creating workarounds for them in CascadePoint
  • But...we cannot test every application out there, so if you have a problem, forward it to us through the Contact page.

5. I have a lot of videos and song files that I want to archive -- How does CascadePoint handle this?

  • Set up the types of extensions you are using for these files (e.g., MP3, WMA, etc).
  • CascadePoint archives files when they change. Since these files will not normally change, CascadePoint will not archive them.
  • You can force an archive of these files by going to the "Archive Maintenance" panel and pressing the "Archive Current Files" button.
  • This will archive the most current versions of your selected file types (note: it will not copy files that are already current in the archive).

6. Sometimes the local and remote archives don't show the same number of files

  • To reduce the network bandwidth, CascadePoint updates the remote archive every 10 minutes. So it will take a few minutes to catch up with local changes.
  • If you are using CascadePoint on a laptop and you are reconnecting to the network after some time away, there may be quite a few files to copy.
